The Association of the Chemical Profession of Alberta is pleased to offer a two-day course on the chemistry of pollutants.

Part 2 – Pollutants of the Water

• Water chemistry
• Types of water pollutants
• Analytical methodologies for different
• Water decontamination processes

Day 2 - Friday, December 6, 2019, 8 am - 5 pm

Part 3 – Pollutants of the Soil

• Soil contamination
• Soil sample collection  
• Analytical methods for major contaminants
• Soil clean-up methods

Part 4 – Pollutants of the Air

• Air pollution
• Approaches to collecting air samples from area and point sources
• Analytical methods used for each type of air pollutant.

Speaker Bio

Abdel M. Kharrat Ph.D., P.Chem.

Director, a-KEM Solutions Ltd, Edmonton, Alberta Canada

Abdel Kharrat studied at the University of Bordeaux, France, where he earned his Doctorate in Chemistry.

Abdel previously worked at the University of Alberta Soil Sciences Department before joining Alberta Research Council’s (currently InnoTech Alberta) environmental chemistry business unit.  There he served as a Senior Research Scientist and a team leader. He led a group of scientists and technologists conducting work on the development of new technologies and analytical methods for soil, water, and air, and was granted the ”Business and Technical Achievement” award.

Abdel has worked and collaborated with many industries including Environment Canada, the Government of Alberta, City of Edmonton, City of Calgary, and the Alberta Agriculture Department.  He has significant experience in the analytical chemistry of soil, water, and air pollutants. Abdel has published numerous papers, client reports, and internal reports and has many patents to his name. He has acted as a Board Director and President of the ACPA and was the Chair of the Technical Program at the Industrial Chemistry Conference held in Edmonton in 2014.

He is currently the Director of a-KEM Solutions Ltd. a chemical consulting company that focuses on oil and gas operations and their environmental implications.

This course is being offered for environmental analytical chemists who work in the lab or the field as well as environmental engineers, biologists, forestry professionals, agrologists, and government regulators.
