Full-Day Course in Professional Ethics for Chemists

Offered in conjunction with CSC2012:
The 95th Canadian Chemical Conference and Exhibition

This one-day course will provide an introduction to the ethical framework that guides professional chemists in the conduct of their duties. The objective of this course is two-fold: to ensure a working knowledge of the fundamental ethical concepts embedded in Professional Chemist accreditation and to learn how to analyze work-related ethical situations and make the best possible decisions.

Major Topics

• Professional Integrity, including duties to the public and the profession as well as to employees, employers and clients.
• Scholarship and Competence, including accuracy of work, acknowledgment of credit and continuing competence.
• Managing Conflicts, including conflict identification and conflict resolution strategies.
• Professional Relationships, including professional conduct, transparency, respect and reputation management.

Exam

A short written exam will be given at the end of the course to evaluate the progress of the participant in developing ethical decision-making skills. This exam will be based on a case study.

Anyone attending the course and successfully passing this exam will receive a completion certificate. Those receiving this certificate will have completed the upcoming ethics course requirements of the ACPA and of several other regulated professional chemist associations in Canada.

• $250 for non-members
• $200 for members of ACPA, ACPBC, ACPO, OCQ, NSCS or CIC.

The course fee includes lunch and a copy of The Ethical Chemist: Professionalism and Ethics in Science by J. Kovac.
